OUR STORY

Copmanhurst is situated on the Clarence River, about 30 kilometres north west of Grafton on the north coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is a rural area including the village of Copmanhurst itself which has a population of about 350. The Brigade’s area is approximately 150 sq kms, and apart from the village, includes rural residential, farmland, national park and state forest. The total population of the Brigade area is about 1000. Areas that have not been cleared for farmland are largely dry schlerophyl forest. The terrain varies from river flat to undulating hill country. Some areas are not accessible by vehicle.
Copmanhurst Brigade was established in 1968 in response to a need to organise and coordinate fire fighting activities in the local community area. The Brigade was established under the auspices of Copmanhurst Shire Council and was one of nine brigades established in the Shire of Copmanhurst.
The total membership of the Brigade is about 65 personnel, however members actively participating in brigade activities average 20.
The Brigade Headquarters are located in Prescott Street Copmanhurst. It consists of a main station building which houses two heavy tankers, an office and other amenities which are shared with Copmanhurst State Emergency Services, who’s section houses emergency and rescue equipment and a flood boat. A smaller two vehicle shed (the original brigade building) houses a light tanker and other equipment. A recently constructed bulk fuel storage shed is also now in use. This facility was supplied by Copmanhurst Shire and erected by members and is used by both the Brigade and SES.
Copmanhurst Brigade participates actively in the community, assisting at local events and undertaking regular community education activities.
In July 2001, The New South Wales Rural Fire Service Clarence Valley Zone was formed, and Copmanhurst Brigade became part of this new management structure. There were a total of 42 brigades in the Clarence Valley operating under the auspices of the Zone which included Copmanhurst, Pristine Waters, Maclean Shires and Grafton City. In 2004, all local government entities in the valley were amalgamated to form the Clarence Valley Council. The Zone's responsibilities do not include provision of services to the urban areas of Grafton and Maclean which are the responsibility of The New South Wales Fire Brigade.
During the 2002/2003 fire season, members contributed in excess of 8000 voluntary manhours. This encompassed local and out of area fires, with many hours supporting volunteers working at the fire front. During the last season, members activity has been minimal, attending one out of area fire and just a few other incidents. Members continue their ongoing training and community education activities.
